Duncan agreed to go check out the two ships and call for help if anything popped up, while Greg and Kyra went hunting for the single life sign. They were walking slowly down one of the hallways, making for the storage room.

“Greg...” Kyra said suddenly. Reluctance stained her voice.

“Yeah?” he asked cautiously.

“I want you to know that...I know I'm asking a lot,” she said. Kyra stopped suddenly and Greg stopped with her. They stood in the corridor, looking at each other. Not for the first time, he thought of how insane this situation was: two of them, heavily armed and armored, standing in a dying outpost on a lost planet, talking about their feelings.

“I know, I get that,” he said.

“I mean...I know your memories mean a lot to you. But...what if they're gone? I mean really gone? You can't recover them no matter what? What if you throw away a life together, chasing your past that might be unrecoverable?”

Greg opened his mouth, then stopped. He remembered asking a vaguely similar question to Cage. The conversation was still clear in his head, but it felt like it had been years ago. He'd been asking about Kyra, whether or not to pursue her...

“You sound like a middle-schooler,” Cage observed.

“Thanks. My point is, smartass-”

Cage snorted and a ghost of a smile touched his lips.

“-I have no memories. What if I start something with her and my memories come back? What if I've got a girlfriend somewhere? Or worse, what if I'm an asshole? What if I'm a huge misogynist? What if I'm abusive? That would be unfair to her and she doesn't deserve that.”

“All valid points, I suppose. Let me ask you this. Do you have any reason to believe that your previous personality might suddenly reassert itself? Or, even better, what if how you are acting now is your previous personality, minus the memories? While there is some truth to the notion that a man is his memories, there is a lot more to what makes a man. His decisions, for one. And besides, we’re in a dangerous situation. We may not get out of this alive. If you were to die tomorrow, and you turned Kyra down tonight, let's say, would you feel better?”

Greg considered this for a long moment. “No...I guess not, but what if we do survive and everything goes south afterward? What if I suck as a boyfriend? What if-”

“What if? What if?” Cage's face hardened. “You aren't asking yourself any questions that every other man and woman hasn't asked. There are no guarantees in this life, Bishop. Nothing but death and misery.”

He'd gone for Kyra, they were lovers now, and it had been great. But now she was asking him such a similar question...could he really go back on his own philosophy just because it no longer suited him? Could he leave her? What if she was right?

“I don't really know what to say,” he said finally. “I think...we should focus on the mission.
